It's Easy To Be Green!

Girls- this is your chance to Take Action to make a difference in the environment! Discover the many ways you can change the environment in your community for the better through interactive activities, breakout sessions and speakers!

Any girl grades K-12; Girls must be accompanied by an adult and troops must follow Satety-Wise girl to adult ratios.

Cost

$15 per girl and adult which includes event and lunch.

Parking

Parking is $0.75 cents per hour, per car for the day.

Transportation

Cost is $10 per person. Detailed information will be sent regarding pick up and drop off location in a confirmation letter. Registration for transportation is due by April 2. Transportation update:

• Quad Cities: No girls registered, bus has been cancelled.
• Dubuque: 4 girls registered for bus, bus has been cancelled. However, we are providing transportation for those 4 people by van who requested transportation.
• Waterloo: 5 girls registered for bus, bus has been cancelled.  However, we are providing transportation for those 5 people by van who requested transportation.
• Decorah: 23 girls registered for bus, we are keeping bus, we have 26 additional seats open.
• Burlington: 48 girls registered for bus, we are keeping bus.  Have 4 additional seats open that can still be filled.

Patches

Event patches can be purchased for $2 each. Patches will be available for pick up at the event registration table and must be ordered by April 2.

How to Register

To register for this event, simply complete either the Individual Girl Registration or if the entire troop is planning to attend, complete the Troop Registration. Event, patch and transportation registration deadline: April 2. Final event registration deadline: April 16.

Event Highlights

Special Guests:

• Michele Beschen is a high-spirited how-to hipster from the Midwest who has a passion for all things creative. She is the host and creator of the series B. Original on HGTV, B. Organic on Public Television and has built a growing multi-media business designed to empower people to express their creative side through the delivery of innovative projects and ideas. She inspires men, women and children to look at things differently, approach 'do it yourself' projects fearlessly, and to take action on their ideas. • Rap your way to a better environment! Ted Coopwood will once again sing raps and get you motivated to help your health as well as the health of the environment. Ted works for the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Children's Health Protection as the coordinator of Youth and Intergenerational Programming and travels throughout the country teaching kids how to protect our earth.

SWAPS Station:

• Here is your chance to meet girls all across GSEIWI and exchange SWAPS! Make sure to bring some SWAPS to share.

Interactive Vendor Fair:

• Local vendors will have interactive activities to travel through, including the DNR Mobile Education Trailer. This station will showcase Energy Alternatives, Household Hazardous Wastes, Recycling, Illegal Dumping and Composting through TVs, interactive touch screens and games. The Girl Scout Shop will be offered and Cookie Program Credit will be accepted.

Breakout Session Highlights

Share Your Voice! After lunch, stop by the GSEIWI Evaluation Survey booth and tell us what you think of Girls Go Global. Every girl that completes a short event evaluation will receive a free stuffed dolphin, complements of Ashton Farms!  Every adult that completes an event evaluation will be entered into a drawing for a door prize of natural household supplies from Earth Friendly Products.

• Stop by and sign a "Water Pledge" to receive a free Forever Green water bottle!

• Bring SWAPS to share at the SWAP station, and make a few more while you are there! Not sure what a SWAP is? Check out this web page: http://www.girlscouts.org/program/gs_central/swaps/.
• See a life-size dragon boat and find out how to be on a rowing team.
• Listen to Miss Iowa play her violin.
• Learn how to make neat bracelets out of recyclables.
• Play a variety of life-size games ranging from jeopardy, bingo and many more!
• Practice casting a line with a fishing pole.

For Girl Scouts of all ages:

• SWAPS Station - Come swap SWAPS with the GSEIWI membership team. Trade SWAPS with others and make a cool SWAPS to take home. There will also be a table where you can learn all about our brand new Pen Pal Program - get signed up today to make new friends in GSEIWI to keep in touch with throughout the whole year!

For Girl Scout Daisies in Grades K-1:

• Kids Can Live Green: Green Iowa Americorps (10:30–11:00)(11:15–11:45) What does it mean to live green? Find out at this fun introduction to reducing, reusing, recycling and renewable energy.
• Living with the Land: Green Iowa Americorps (12:45–1:15) Learn how to eat out of your own backyard! Start your own pizza garden by planting a seed in an environmentally-friendly container and watching it grow into beautiful food. While learning to survive off what the land can provide for us, girls will learn what we can do for the earth.
• Queen for a Day: Mrs. Michelle Berndt (1:25–1:55)(2:05–2:35) Become queen for a day when you meet Mrs. Iowa 2009/ Mrs. USA Beauties 2010 and find out how she takes action in her community. Girls will make their own autograph book and will receive Mrs. Iowa’s autograph.

For Girl Scout Brownies in Grades 2-3:

• Become a Recycling Champion: U of I (10:30–11:00) Girls will learn about recycling and every day household items that are recyclable and even reusable. After learning about the many benefits of recycling, girls will participate in an interactive recycling project.
• Animals and Our Environment (11:15–11:45)(12:45–1:15) Find out all about animals that live in Iowa and Illinois, and how we can keep their homes clean and healthy!
• Solar Cooking: Center for Energy & Environmental Education (1:25–1:55)(2:05–2:35) Learn all about solar cooking and how you can make yummy food using just the sun's rays! Girls will make their own solar cooker and will receive the materials needed to bring their solar cooker home and put it to the test with a Girl Scout troop or family.

For Girl Scout Juniors in Grades 4-5:

• "The Science of Strings" Anne Langguth, Miss Iowa (10:30–11:00) Find out from Miss Iowa more about the science of the violin and how it produces music.
• Girls "Scout" a Better Snack: U of I Public Health (11:15–11:45) Learn how to separate food fact from food fiction! During this session you will learn all about the guidelines for healthy eating—from reading food labels to shopping for food at your local farmers' market. We'll even share recipes for healthy snacks.
• The Saying Is True! You ARE What You Eat!: U of I College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (12:45–1:15) Learn about the differences between conventional and organic farming techniques. Find out more about the use of land, pesticides and soil erosion and how you can be good to our planet through organic and home food production.
• Cool Stuff About Your Body - Healthcare Careers (1:25–1:55)(2:05–2:35) This interactive session will allow you to learn about careers in healthcare while finding out cool stuff about the human body and how it works!
• Mini-Solar Sprint Car Derby: UNI CEEE (10:30–11:00)(11:15–11:45)(12:45–1:15)(1:25–1:55)(2:05–2:35) Learn how to build a mini-solar sprint car and make your own using alternate energy sources! Then you and your partner will put your mini-solar sprint car to the test and race against others. This breakout is limited to 60 girls in each session.

For Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors & Ambassadors Grades 6-12: (Second Floor Conference Rooms)

• Admission to Regents Universities and Green Careers (10:30–11:00)(11:15–11:45) Find out what you need to know to prepare for college at a Regent University (Iowa, ISU or UNI). Girls will learn about admission requirements, similarities of schools, preparing to apply, as well as "Green" programs, majors and initiatives taking place on these campuses.
• Cool Stuff About Your Body (Health Careers) - Area Health Education Careers (12:45–1:15) This interactive session will allow you to learn about careers in healthcare while finding out cool stuff about the human body and how it works!
• Mini Silver and Gold Award Training (1:25-1:55) Calling all Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors learn what it takes to earn the two highest Girl Scout awards, the Girl Scout Gold or Silver Award. You'll find out all the requirements as well as the many benefits of earning these awards.
• Global Perspective: Taking Medicine Around the World (U of I College of Medicine) (2:05-2:35) Learn what it is like to study to become a doctor and then use that knowledge to help people from around the globe!
• Leave No Trace (10:30–11:00)(11:15–11:45)(12:45–1:15)(1:25–1:55)(2:05–2:35) Love the Earth? Make sure to Leave No Trace! You will discover ways to enjoy the outdoors and nature without making a large impact on the environment. Girls who attend one of these sessions will receive a free official Leave No Trace tag.
• Radish Reels Mini-Doc: GSEIWI (10:30-11:45) Make a mini-documentary using a video camera (that we will provide) regarding the environment and "Going Green" as well as your own take on Girls Go Global.
• Gross Anatomy (10:30–11:00)(11:15–11:45) Explore a Mini-Medical School Program, Gross Anatomy, an interactive program featuring a video showcasing four medical procedures done at the University of Iowa and touch and hold real human organs that have gone through the plastination process.
• Be a Leader NOW! With Ted Coopwood (12:45–1:15)(1:25–1:55) Girls will have a blast at this highly interactive leadership training by Ted Coopwood from the EPA. Ted knows a lot about the environment, but he also knows a lot about teens and what skills they need to become leaders within their community. Girls will come away from this session feeling confident in being a leader at school, in extra curricular activities and in Girl Scouts! The Saying Is True!
• You ARE What You Eat!: U of I College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (2:05–2:35) Learn about the differences between conventional and organic farming techniques. Find out more about the use of land, pesticides and soil erosion and how you can be good to our planet through organic and home food production. Try your hand at transplanting starter pepper plants into larger pots.
