Adult Learning
As part of its commitment to supporting adult volunteers, Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois offers quality, low- or no-cost adult learning through a variety of methods:
- on-line
- classroom style
- home study
Classroom style courses are held at a variety of locations throughout the council. Check out the
08-09 GSEIWI Adult Learning Schedule. It is a complete list of dates, locations and fees (if applicable) for adult courses. To register, fill out the Adult Learning Registration Form and mail to the Director of Volunteer Development. If you have any questions regarding training, contact the Director of Volunteer Development.

Orientation to Girl Scouting
Orientation is required before starting any volunteer position. You may take this session in the following ways:
- scheduled session (offered 30 minutes before any Getting Started training)
- during a recruitment
- on-line at http://onlinelearning.girlscouts.org; password: discover (When setting up learning log – for your volunteer manager-type in: adultlearning@gseiwi.org)
Super Saturdays
Adult learning opportunities for Girl Scout Leaders, Co-Leaders and Advisors- all wrapped into one day; Getting Started, Leadership Essentials (all grade levels) and Enrichments! Super Saturdays are only available in the Fall.

What Do You Need?
- Orientation to Girl Scouting (1/2 hour)
- Basic orientation to Girl Scout Program that is required before placement in any volunteer position. This course is also available on-line at: http://adultlearning.girlscouts.org
- Getting Started (1 ½ hours)
- This course is designed to help your troop get started; registration forms, safety issues and involving families. Required for all new leaders and must be taken before starting a new troop.
- Leadership Essentials (2 hours each)
- This course is designed to equip leaders with information on how to lead girls to Discover, Connect and Take Action using the new Grade Level Journeys. It will cover leadership and management skills, plus grade appropriate program information. All grade levels are included in the course.

- Homestudy is available for:

- Outdoor Training
- Outdoor Skills Training is required when taking your troop on an adventure in the outdoors. Contact the adult learning department for more details.
- Travel/Lodge Overnight
- Additional courses required. Contact the adult learning department for more details.
- Specialized Activity Training (length varies, fee applies)
- Archery
- Canoeing
- Challenge Course
- Horseback Riding (Trail Leader)
- Zip Line
- First Aid and CPR (length varies, offered at discounted fee through local Red Cross chapters)
- These courses provide certification through Red Cross chapters and the Amerian Heart Association in First Aid & Adult CPR. Adults needing to recertify in CPR only may do so at this course.
Learning Opportunities
Interested in learning Girl Scout songs and games, how to plan a bridging ceremony, or how to increase parent involvement in your troop? These and other adult learning opportunities can happen "on request" in your area. To request courses, find at least two dates that will work for your group, five or more people, and a location. Please allow for three to four weeks advance notice for volunteer trainers. To schedule a course on request, or for more information about adult learning opportunities, contact the
Director of Volunteer Development.
