Happy Anniversary, Girl Scouts!
In 2012 Girl Scouts of the USA will mark 100 years of inspiring girls and young women with the ideals of courage, confidence and character. Millions of active Girl Scouts, volunteer and alumnae will come together to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts. What will you be doing? To learn more about what GSEIWI has planned for this auspicious milestone, check out just a few of the activities that we are already planning!
All of these will be ready to roll out on our 100th Anniversary website in August 2011. We thought you would like a sneak preview!
We are asking all of our passionate musicians to write us a song! We are looking for a GSEIWI 100th Anniversary Song to be performed at the World Thinking Day Girl Kick-Off on March 10, 2012 and we want YOU to author it.
This is a chance for you to combine your love of music and Girl Scouts! For the 100th Anniversary, we will be putting together Girls Chorus groups from all over the council. We are hoping that each Service Unit or Region will put together groups of girls who can perform at local and regional events as well as be a part of our World Thinking Day Girl Kick-off event on March 10, 2012. If you have a chorus, don’t you need a song? Of course! This is our call for all of you budding musicians (girls or adults) to write us a song to celebrate our 100th Anniversary. It’s a contest!
The song can be simple or intricate — one melody or harmonious parts — funny or serious — you are the writer! The theme is Girl Scouts and the 100th Anniversary — the rest is up to you! Our winner will have the honor of having their song performed at the Girl Scouts kickoff event and receive a $25 iTunes gift card. Please submit your original song to KimH@GSEIWI.org or mail to Kim Hull at P.O. Box 190, West Burlington, IA 52655. The deadline for song submission is June 30, 2011. Our 100th Anniversary Committee will be the judges (no Simon Cowell, we promise). The winning song (or songs) will be used throughout our centenary celebration.
Adventure 100 is a centenary challenge that all members can take part in. It can be done by individual girls or as a troop. The challenge consists of 10 sections and within each section there are 10 adventures to pursue! Adventures such as playing games in the dark, having a wet sponge toss, finding out about animal trainers, learning how to samba, making your own short film, designing the Girl Scout uniform of the future and so much more! Of course there will be a patch to celebrate the completion of the challenge! Adventure 100 will be available on the website in August 2011.
How will your Service Unit plan to celebrate the 100th Anniversary? The committee has put together a great packet of information with ideas for activities and events for Service Units to put together for troops. Ideas such as a Girl Scout Promise Circle on March 12, 2012 and grade level events complete with activity ideas and schedules, time capsule plans, plans for a 100th Anniversary Community garden, tips for putting together an historical display in your local library, suggestions on starting your area's Girl Chorus or 100th Anniversary Play. We have so many things for you to use to get the party started!
Our first big event will be the 100th Anniversary Girl Kick-Off Event March 2012. Put this on your calendar now — it is sure to be an extravaganza you won’t want to miss.
We will kick-off our 100th Anniversary Celebration in a big way with an event that will honor our heritage and herald our future. Plans are in the making right now, so again, be sure to check back to learn more as the time gets closer!
What better way to celebrate the 100th Anniversary than by visiting the place where it all began! Discover hidden gardens and old plantations. We will visit the Girl Scout First Headquarters and participate in programs at Juliette Gordon Low's Birthplace. For girls in grades 6 – 12. Check back later for a registration flyer and more information as the time gets closer.
We will have camporees in several of our camps in the summer of 2012. We are looking for volunteers to plan these events right now! Contact Deb Boyd at 309-788-0833 or email DebB@GSEIWI.org if you are interested in helping. The locations of the camporees will depend entirely on where we have the volunteers to plan them.
How many things with 100 can you think to do? Well, we have put together quite a list of wacky 100s for you to try! OR your troop can add their own Wacky 100 ideas.
If you have questions, please send an e-mail to 100years@GSEIWI.org.
In 100 years, Girl Scouts have produced many girls of courage, confidence and character. Every woman who has been a Girl Scout has a story.
In 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding and Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois has planned a number of ways to help observe this momentous milestone. One of these ways we plan to celebrate will be the publishing of a limited-edition book that tells your stories of Girl Scouts. Click here »
